The African Development Bank (AfDB) is a multilateral development bank that supports public and private sector projects in 54 countries on and around the African continent. The Independent Review Mechanism (IRM) is the grievance mechanism for the AfDB.

The IRM has two functions: Mediation (problem solving) and Compliance Review. Mediation aims to restore dialogue between the relevant parties and resolve issues without attributing blame or fault. Compliance Reviews will assess compliance with all AfDB operational policies and procedures for public sector projects and social and environment policies for private sector projects.
