What is the Big Tech M&A tracker?

The Big Tech Merger & Acquisitions (M&A) Tracker database lists the transactions in which Big Tech companies (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft) announced or completed the acquisition of another company or its assets in the period between 01 January 2019 and 01 January 2026.

It is meant to help activists, academics, and journalists monitor the M&A strategies of Big Tech firms.

The database identifies 217 transactions in which Big Tech companies are involved.

Data sources

The database extracted the list from four different sources:

• LSEG Workspace is a financial data and analytics platform by the London Stock Exchange Group.
• Crunchbase is a business information platform that is widely used for market research, competitive analysis, and tracking mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
• Orbis M&A is a specialised database within Orbis, a global company intelligence platform developed by Bureau van Dijk (a Moody’s Analytics company).
• European Commission’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) website(opens in new window) . Under Article 14 of the DMA, gatekeepers must notify the Commission of any planned concentration involving entities that provide core platform services, other digital services, or facilitate data collection.

No database is fully complete or faultless. Hence, we combined the results of these four sources and cleaned any duplicates and inconsistencies in the data. The DMA list is particularly useful as it relies on mandatory reporting from the companies and includes acquisitions that are not listed in other sources. Further, its scope is broader than other sources above as it also includes transactions related to talent poaching, IP licensing and acquisition of other assets. However, the DMA list only covers transactions from May 2023.

The results were complemented with other online sources, including news articles and data reported by Microsoft to its investors (the only company that did so systematically). However, Microsoft also stopped this reporting after the DMA came into force. Additionally, we verified each transaction by checking online sources for reports or records confirming its occurrence.

Note: Transactions are labelled with ‘*’ where the acquiring Big Tech company challenges the application of the EU Merger Regulation.

Scope

This tracker filters information from the data sources mentioned above, where a Big Tech company acquired at least 51% of the target company’s shares.

However, this definition may overlook certain transactions that effectively grant control to the acquirer. For instance, control can sometimes be obtained by acquiring the target company’s key assets without fully acquiring the company itself. This includes cases where the acquirer hires the target company’s staff and/or acquires its IP rights.

In this dataset, we include those deals, even if they were not technically mergers, as long as they were confirmed by third-party news and reports. In addition, our dataset includes all acquisitions, excluding joint ventures, reported by Big Tech companies and published by the European Commission under the Digital Markets Act. Joint ventures are excluded as they involve the creation of new structures rather than the transfer of control over existing assets.

Furthermore, transactions were excluded if they did not grant controlling rights to a Big Tech company, such as investments or partnerships. This, however, does not mean that there are no competition concerns with such deals. They merely require more in-depth analysis.

Consequently, this dataset aims to list acquisitions based on two main criteria:

• If the transaction is labelled as an acquisition according to Eikon, ORBIS or Crunchbase, or
• If the transaction is reported as an acquisition by Big Tech companies and published by the European Commission on the DMA’s website, excluding joint ventures

The database is limited to transactions announced between January 1, 2019, and January 1, 2026. For searching acquisitions after this date, we refer users to the website(opens in new window) of the European Commission.

Limitations

It is important to note that this list is not exhaustive. Publicly available data on mergers and acquisitions is limited, as not all transactions are reported to regulators. In most jurisdictions, companies are only required to notify authorities if a deal exceeds certain thresholds. For instance, a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report revealed(opens in new window)(opens in new window) that between 2010 and 2019, Big Tech firms conducted 819 transactions without regulatory notification. In Europe, only eight Big Tech mergers were reported to the European Commission between 2019 and 2025.

The reference sources mentioned above vary in the data they provide, the available filters, and their user interfaces. As a result, a transaction identified as a Big Tech merger in one source may not appear in another. Therefore, we checked every transaction with additional sources such as reports and records. Additionally, certain transactions are only listed in the European Commission’s DMA database. However, since the DMA came into effect on May 2, 2023, this list does not include mergers that occurred before that date. 

We also anticipate that there are additional mergers that have not yet been made public.
