Civil society organisations drafted a letter calling upon the Bangladesh government to allow the Bangladesh Accord to fully and independently continue operations in the country for the duration of the private contract, which remains binding upon the 192 signatory brands until 2021. The Bangladesh Accord is an independent, legally binding agreement between brands and trade unions to work towards a safe and healthy garment and textile industry in Bangladesh.

The organisations also call upon the government to immediately stop the violence against and intimidation of workers and unionists, and to respect and assure workers’ right to peaceful assembly.

A week of solidarity with garment workers in Bangladesh will take place in multiple countries in the week of 28 January. In The Hague, demonstrators will raise their concerns in front of the Embassy of Bangladesh on 29 January 2019.
