Years of lobbying by multinationals finally rewarded by abolishing the dividend tax

“The dividend tax is, of course, a monster, must go, is bad for the climate. (…) Delivers relatively little, abolishing it is good for the image of the Netherlands.” It is November 2009, and Bernard Wientjes, chairman of the Dutch employers’ club VNO-NCW*, did not mince his words.

Wientjes had just presented a report to then-Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende about the significance of corporate headquarters for the Dutch economy and the need to abolish the dividend tax. Fortunately, Prime Minister Balkenende reacted sensibly to VNO-NCW’s appeal.

*(VNO-NCW represents the Dutch business community and regularly takes part in talks with the Ministry of Finance)
