Webinar 23 June: “Unpacking the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment”

In the final days of 2020, the EU and China reached a political agreement on a Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI). Friends and foes alike were taken by surprise by the sudden rush to conclude the agreement, after seven years of negotiations. And while the text is undergoing “legal scrubbing”, its future seems far from secure. Revelations of forced labour in Xinjiang have fuelled criticism of the agreement’s weak commitments to labour rights. Recently, tensions over tit-for-tat sanctions between the EU and China caused the European Parliament to vote in favour of a resolution to freeze the negotiations.

But if the agreement reaches the finish line, what is at stake? What kind of concessions in terms of market access have been made? How are worker rights protected? And what are the consequences for the relations between the EU, China, the US, and others? We will discuss these and many more questions with our diverse panel of experts during a two-hour webinar on Wednesday 23 June from 14:00 to 16:00 CET. Joining us are Amélie Canonne from Aitec/Attac France, Joe Zhang from the International Institute for Sustainable Development, Samira Rafaela, MEP of Renew Europe, Frans-Paul van der Putten from the Clingendael Institute, and Imogen Liu, PhD scholar at Maastricht University.
