Insurers make insufficient efforts to prevent or tackle serious human rights violations in the cobalt sector.
This is evident from research by SOMO for ‘Time to start caring about cobalt’, a publication for the Fair Insurance Guide (Eerlijke Verzekeringswijzer). According to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, insurers must raise problems with cobalt extraction with cobalt using companies they invest in. However, in practice this hardly happens.
