Short circuit on the green energy market
Research into the sustainability of the electricity purchased by municipalities
Dutch municipalities are responsible for the lighting of their roads and for the energy that their buildings consume. This means that, together municipalities are a major consumer of energy and, with their collective purchasing power, can exert a great deal of influence on the market. This study looks at how much energy the 390 Dutch municipalities actually use, from which companies they purchase their electricity and how this electricity is ‘converted’ into green energy. This information gives insight into the extent to which Dutch municipalities adhere to the sustainability objectives the government has set for energy use, and to what extent they actually purchase renewable electricity.
