Dutch tax system a threat to the American treasury?

On May 4th, President Obama presented a plan to combat constructions which American multinationals use to avoid tax. He identified the Netherlands, along with Ireland and Bermuda, as one of the key countries in these tax-avoiding constructions.

On May 4th, President Obama presented a plan to combat constructions which American multinationals use to avoid tax. He identified the Netherlands, along with Ireland and Bermuda, as one of the key countries in these tax-avoiding constructions. However, after indignant reactions from the Dutch Ministry of Finance, Obama removed the Netherlands from the list.

Nevertheless, Dutch tax law does have some of the characteristics of a tax haven. In recent years, SOMO has carried out research into the Dutch tax system, and has shown that the Netherlands offers multinationals the opportunity to reduce their tax burden abroad by means of beneficial tax arrangements. On this basis, it is not surprising that the Netherlands was named by Obama as one of the key countries in constructions for American companies to avoid tax.
