The perverse lottery of Novartis

The Novartis lottery is in full swing. The pharma giant raffled off a hundred times the very expensive drug Zolgensma among young children with the rare and very serious muscle disease SMA. Desperate parents and doctors have registered children for this Novartis publicity stunt and find it hard to compete in the “lottery for life. There is a good chance that a child with SMA dies before his second birthday and Zolgensma offers hope. One-year-old Jayme was in the media a lot in recent months, he could not enter the lottery and his family had started a successful crowdfunding action, supported by Dutch celebrities. But why are family and doctors faced with such major dilemmas? And why is it so expensive?
