Maarten Hietland specializes in research on corporate tax avoidance by multinational corporations and research on the financialisation of today’s economy.

Before joining SOMO in 2019, Maarten worked as a researcher and policy advisor on tax and inequality at Oxfam Novib in the Netherlands.

Maarten holds a bachelor in Political sciences from the Radboud University Nijmegen, and a master in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam, where he dissertated on the relation between financialisation and the financial crisis of 2007. His master in International Economics from the University of Utrecht was concluded by a research that focused on the determinants of the increase of the top one per cent of the income distribution over the last 30 years in the global North.
