Deze \u2018opleiding\u2019 is niet meer dan een korte inwerkperiode. Bij Flextronics werkt zelfs twee derde van de werknemers via een uitzendbureau. Bij Salcomp is zeventig procent van de werknemers \u2018in opleiding\u2019. De tijdelijke contracten bieden werknemers weinig zekerheid, lagere lonen, en minder bonussen. Werknemers hebben weinig uitzicht op een vast contract, zelfs als zij al lang voor het bedrijf werken. Daarnaast staan de werknemers onder constante druk om productiedoelen te halen.<\/p>\n<p>De meeste werknemers komen naar Chennai uit andere delen van India en zijn aangewezen op het huren van dure woonruimtes, die zij vaak moeten delen met andere werknemers. Als het mogelijk is sturen zij geld naar huis, maar vaak zijn hun inkomens te laag om zelf van rond te komen. Ze verdienen een loon wat over het algemeen net boven het minimum loon van 56 euro per maand ligt. Maar, \u201cVolgens de werknemers moet een leefbaar loon tussen de 145-240 euro per maand zijn. Met dat geld kunnen zij een eigen kamer huren en een gezin beginnen,\u201d zegt Gopinath Parakuni van Cividep-India, de lokale onderzoek partner van makeITfair.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009 en 2010 vonden er protesten plaats in elektronicabedrijven en gingen werknemers bij Nokia verscheidene keren in staking. Eerst richtte het protest zich tegen de tijdelijke contracten en de lage lonen. Later eisten werknemers dat ontslagen collega\u2019s weer in dienst genomen zouden worden. Deze aanhoudende protesten leidden uiteindelijk tot een unieke loonovereenkomst met de vakbond. Dit is zeer opmerkelijk voor de internationale elektronica-industrie waar vakbonden vaak geen voet aan de grond krijgen. Nog opmerkelijker is dat deze overeenkomst leidde tot een maandloon ver boven het minimum in Chennai. In de Nokia fabriek zelfs tot 186 euro voor werknemers met een vast contract.
