Dat is een belangrijke bevinding uit het rapport &#8216;<em>Certified Unilever Tea. Small cup, big difference?&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0dat SOMO en LIW vandaag lanceren.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somo.nl\/nl\/certified-unilever-tea\/\">Certified Unilever Tea<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Uit het <a href=\"https:\/\/www.somo.nl\/nl\/certified-unilever-tea\/\">SOMO rapport<\/a> blijkt dat theeplukkers op Unilever\u2019s eigen plantage in Kenia last hebben van corruptie en seksuele intimidatie door chanterende werkopzichters, discriminatie en slechte huisvesting. Ook beklaagden velen zich erover dat ze geen zicht hadden op een vast contract met bijbehorende betere arbeidsvoorwaarden. Het bedrijf ontloopt vaste dienstverbanden door werknemers voor een periode van minimaal een maand te ontslaan waarna ze weer aangenomen worden.<\/p>\n<h2>Situatie in India niet beter<\/h2>\n<p>Bij de toeleveranciers van Unilever in India is de situatie niet beter. Ondanks het Rainforest Alliance keurmerk zijn er problemen met uitbetalen van het minimumloon, discriminatie, onbeschermd gebruik van bestrijdingsmiddelen en de voorzieningen op de plantages. Net als in Kenia onthouden plantages veel werknemers betere arbeidsvoorwaarden door ze quasi permanent in tijdelijke dienst te houden. Ook is de situatie met de vakbonden problematisch. Zo worden kritische vakbonden op allerlei manieren tegengewerkt, waardoor de belangen van theeplukkers niet goed behartigd worden.<\/p>\n<h2>Betrouwbaarheid van duurzaamheidskeurmerken twijfelachtig<\/h2>\n<p>Maatschappelijke organisaties wijzen theebedrijven zoals Unilever, wereldmarktleider in thee, al jaren op de noodzaak om iets te doen aan de vaak slechte arbeidsomstandigheden in deze sector. In reactie hierop nemen theebedrijven gelukkig meer hun verantwoordelijkheid. Steeds vaker wordt hiervoor door theeverkopers samenwerking gezocht met duurzaamheidskeurmerken, zoals Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade en Utz Certified, die door strenge codes en controles in theorie de beste keus zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Met een groei van 2000% van 2004 tot 2009 en een geschat marktaandeel van circa 15% van alle ge\u00ebxporteerde thee wereldwijd in 2011, maken deze keurmerken dan ook een stormachtige groei door. De praktijk op de theeplantages met een certificaat van Rainforest Alliance, veruit het grootste duurzaamheidskeurmerk in de sector, blijkt echter weerbarstig.\u00a0SOMO-onderzoeker Sanne van der Wal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018De bevindingen uit ons nieuwe onderzoek roepen twijfels op over de betrouwbaarheid van het Rainforest Alliance keurmerk. Toch heeft dit onderzoek niet primair de intentie om de betrouwbaarheid van keurmerken in twijfel te trekken en daarmee de groei van keurmerken in deze sector te remmen. Wel denken we dat het cre\u00ebren van meer helderheid over de effectiviteit van de keurmerken in ieders belang is. En daarmee maakt dit onderzoek een begin.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Meer onderzoek nodig<\/h2>\n<p>SOMO en LIW pleiten echter voor meer onderzoek naar de werking van keurmerken in de praktijk. Daarnaast bevelen ze Rainforest Alliance en de bedrijven die met dit keurmerk werken aan om de gevonden problemen beter te onderzoeken en tegen te gaan.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lees de <a
