De nadruk lag op benzeen, een chemische stof die zeer kankerverwekkend is en veel gebruikt wordt in verschillende industri\u00eble processen bij het maken van elektronica, speelgoed, schoenen en meubels.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens LAC hanteren westerse bedrijven dubbele standaarden: zij houden zich aan de Europese Wetgeving, maar hebben er geen problemen mee om hun arbeiders in China aan gevaarlijke stoffen bloot te stellen, inclusief benzeen.<\/p>\n<p>Deelnemers van de expert meeting waren vertegenwoordigers van Nederlandse vakbonden, ngo\u2019s en andere experts die zich met hun werk richten op industri\u00eble processen in China. Helaas zijn bedrijven en vertegenwoordigers van de overheid niet ingegaan op de uitnodiging om hieraan deel te nemen.\u00a0LAC zou met drie mensen aanwezig zijn, maar de Chinese autoriteiten weigerden \u00e9\u00e9n van hen een uitreisvisum te verstrekken. Yi Yeting, die leukemie heeft door jarenlange arbeid in chemisch besmette containers en zich nu als activist inzet, werd verteld dat hij \u2018niet-bevoegd\u2019 was om China te verlaten. Gelukkig kon hij via Skype de bijeenkomst bijwonen. Gedurende die drie uur konden de deelnemers Yi\u2019s ervaringen uit eerste hand horen en leerden zij meer over de door LAC opgezette \u2018Ban Benzene Campaign\u2019. Ook werd besproken wat er gedaan kan worden om het probleem aan te pakken.<\/p>\n<h2>Menselijke rekening<\/h2>\n<p>Twee korte documentaires van de Amerikaanse filmmaakster Heather White werden die dag getoond. <em>\u2018Who pays the price. Het Nederlandse elektronicabedrijf ASMI heeft een belangrijk minderheidsaandeel (40) in ASMPT. Ming werd in 2009 ziek. Hij had leukemie en pleegde in 2013 zelfmoord op 27-jarige leeftijd. Uit wanhoop, want zijn gezondheid verslechterende enorm en de medische zorg faalde.<\/p>\n<p>De diagnose van leukemie en het ermee leren leven, eist ook zijn tol voor Yi Yeting. De fabriek waar Yi voor werkte, kocht het ziekenhuis om waar hij werd behandeld. Twee\u00ebntwintig maanden lang heeft hij gevochten om de diagnose \u2018werk-gerelateerde-leukemie\u2019 te krijgen. Op dit moment heeft hij meer dan 28 chemotherapie\u00ebn gehad en begint hij resistent te worden. Desondanks staat hij andere zieke arbeiders bij met juridisch advies, tot ongenoegen van de Chinese autoriteiten. Yi vertelt hoe hij door het National Security Agency in de gaten wordt gehouden. <em>\u201cHet incident gister op het vliegveld bij vertrek staat niet op zichzelf\u201d<\/em>, zegt Yi. <em>\u201cIk wordt continu onder druk gezet en ge\u00efntimideerd.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Sluipmoordenaar<\/h2>\n<p>Yi verzamelde inmiddels tweehonderd cases van arbeiders die ziek werden door blootstelling aan benzeen. Offici\u00eble statistieken van het aantal zieke arbeiders veroorzaakt door benzeen zijn niet beschikbaar. Volgens Suki Chung van LAC worden er dagelijks vijf miljoen arbeiders blootgesteld aan chemicali\u00ebn in de provincie Guangdong, China\u2019s industri\u00eble \u2018hub\u2019. Veel arbeiders zijn zich niet bewust van wat benzeen is en wat de gevaren voor hun gezondheid van zulke gevaarlijke chemicali\u00ebn kunnen zijn. Dat is een probleem. Velen van hen komen van het platteland en hebben weinig onderwijs gevolgd. Wanneer zij ziek worden, realiseren zij zich niet meteen dat hun ziekte werkgerelateerd kan zijn. Diegene die deze diagnose wel krijgen mogen zich \u2018gelukkig\u2019 prijzen, de rest blijft onzichtbaar.<\/p>\n<h2>De weg vooruit<\/h2>\n<p>Wim van Veelen, beleidsadviseur bij FNV, voorzag de discussie van de noodzakelijke juridische achtergrondinformatie. Van Veelen gaf aan dat volgens het \u2018European legal framework on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)\u2019 er vier belangrijke stappen zijn die bedrijven zouden moeten nemen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stel grenswaarden in voor kankerverwekkende stoffen;<\/li>\n<li>zorg voor naleving van deze waarden;<\/li>\n<li>voorzie werknemers van de juiste informatie en opleiding; en<\/li>\n<li>zorg voor beschermende kleding voor het personeel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Van Veelen sprak bovendien over de alternatieven die er zijn voor benzeen. <em>\u201cHoewel het geen kankerverwekkende stoffen zijn, zijn zij nog steeds gevaarlijk. Daarom is het monitoren van het gebruik van deze chemicali\u00ebn van groot belang. Overheidsinstanties en de arbeidsinspectie spelen hierin een sleutelrol\u201d<\/em>, bepleit Van Veelen.<\/p>\n<h2>Media-aandacht<\/h2>\n<p>Volgens LAC is er momenteel grote behoefte aan betrokkenheid van bedrijven en media-aandacht.
