Maatschappelijk organisaties van over de hele wereld droegen bij aan de discussie met een rijkdom aan voorstellen en grondige analyses over de noodzakelijkheid van een internationaal juridisch bindend instrument. Dit instrument moet mensenrechtenschendingen voorkomen en voor rechtvaardigheid en remedie voor getroffen mensen zorgen.<\/p>\n<p>Samen met Friends of the Earth, de European Coalition for Corporate Justice, FIDH, organisaties die de Dismantle Corporate Power (Ontmanteling van de macht van het bedrijfsleven) campagne ondersteunen en vele anderen, was ook SOMO bij deze besprekingen aanwezig.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">De meest controversi\u00eble kwestie in deze eerste sessie was de reikwijdte van het toekomstige instrument: moet het alleen gericht zijn op transnationale ondernemingen, of moet het alle ondernemingen omvatten? De EU nam deze tweede positie in maar maakte dit gelijk tot een voorwaarde voor haar deelname aan het proces. De kloof tussen de verschillende lidstaten op dit punt was vanaf de opening van de sessie duidelijk. Hoewel veel maatschappelijke organisaties het erover eens zijn dat het instrument idealiter betrekking moet hebben op alle ondernemingen om lacunes te voorkomen, veroordeelden ze unaniem de niet-opbouwende houding van de EU. Aangezien de discussie over de reikwijdte van het toekomstige instrument nog niet beslecht is en het voor de voortgang van het proces cruciaal is hier uit te komen, kan deze zogenaamde &#8216;hybride model&#8217; nog wel wat meer uitwerking gebruiken.
